Dare to Explore ~ Kia Māia te Whai

Dare to Explore/ Kia Māia te Whai is a free Summer Reading Adventure for kids aged 5 to 13, which saw more than 12,000 kids participate across Auckland last year!

There are heaps of awesome events and activities available at Waiheke Library over the Summer. See below for details of the events.

You can register online at https://www.daretoexplore.nz/ or drop into the library to sign up in person and pick up your free activity booklet.

Dare to Explore is designed to help children:

  • Maintain or improve their reading over the summer break
  • Increase their love of books and reading
  • Become confident library users
  • Have fun and enjoy an adventurous summer holiday!

Waiheke Library’s events over the Summer:

  • Upcycle Wearable Art

Thursday 19 December 3pm – 4:30pm.

Make a utility belt, bracelet or poi using buttons & fabric scraps. Bookings essential, ages 7+


  •  Outdoor Dares

Tuesday 31 December 4pm – 5:30pm

Develop wilderness skills with our go wild games at Whakanewha campsite.

  • Make it Wild!

Saturday 4 January 10am – 11:30am

Get creative exploring and making with bush and beach craft at Whakanewha campsite.

  • Games of Future Past

Tuesday 7 January 2pm – 3:30pm

Come along to the library and help us bring ancient and space-age games to life

  •  Magical Transformations

Wednesday 15 January 2pm – 3:30pm

Come along to the library and have fun experimenting with transformations in art, science and magic!

  • Stuff Matters

Tuesday 21 January 2pm – 3:30pm

Come along to the library and see if you are you up for our recycling challenges to help make a better planet?

Collaboration with the Waiheke Resources Trust.

There are also activities you can do anytime at the library including treasure hunts and 3D printing, and Makerspace continues on Sundays 10:30am-12 noon throughout the holidays.

Complete just 1 challenge from each of the 6 challenge sets and get your invite to our celebration party, which will be held on Saturday 1 February.
