Last Wednesday the Waiheke Dolphins took a year 6 team to the year 6 field days tournament at North Harbour. The team was fielded with a combination of two Waiheke teams which came together and after one training competed extremely well.
The first game was against St Joesphs and won convincingly 13-1. Second game against Pinehurst was a little tougher with an 11-6 win to Waiheke.
Third game was against Chelsea which we won 13-2 and the fourth and final game of our pool was a little bit of a scrappy game so we were happy to finish up with a 5 -1 win against Grey Lynn This meant we won our pool and through to the semifinals against Forest Hill who also had won every game in their pool. The kids were nervous with the team looking strong and tall. WAIHEKE was victorious with a 10-0 win to send us straight to the final. The final game was up against Northcote and at full time the game was a draw at 8 all. The game carried on and with some misunderstanding from our team who started to walk off the court the other teams sealed the win in extra time with the golden goal. As to be expected the kids were disappointed but we reminded them how great they had done to get to the final. Congratulations to the team consisting of Benji Niwa, Maddi Upchurch, Elle Musson, Summer MacIver, Noah Ogilvie, Hanife Atamer, Mia Escolme, Melody Akauola and Olive Cumming.
We had some really strong combinations happening on the court which the kids were all enjoying. Melody, olive, Hanife and Mia had some menacing defence and shut down the shooters time and again. Through the mid court we had some fantastic passing, Driving onto the ball and feeding into the circle from Benji and Noah.
Shooting for us today was a combination of Elle, Summer, Maddi and Noah. There was some great holding, quick passes between them and of course getting our goals in.
